Present Creations from Past Inspirations...
Immersed in the River Arts District of Asheville, NC, Una Barrett creates Relics of a New Age jewelry. Her wearable and sculptural jewelry is created by incorporating mixed metals and other found objects and materials. The work focuses on the fusion of ancient and modern techniques and references.
Inspiration is drawn from the functional and sacred objects of many cultures. Interpretations of objects and symbols such as the abacus, mandala, papoose, and spiral are integrated with contemporary forms influenced by industrial society and technological architecture. The artist utilizes fabrication methods such as lost wax casting, forging, fold forming, conventional and innovative stone setting, soldering, and Ethiopian book binding as tools to create a link between the ethereal and functional. In doing so, the artist creates a conceptual bridge to span the gap of time, joining our collective history to the globalization of present society.
